The art and science of dentistry is constantly evolving. One certainty is that cutting-edge technology will continue to be an important part of dentistry for years to come. Patients understand the importance of technology in the advancement of their dental health.

In this issue, we will discuss some new innovations in dentistry that contribute immensely to the enhancement of the dental experience and advance the quality of dental care.

Dental Lasers- Dental lasers have many benefits. At Center for Specialized Dentistry, laser technology has proven to be a great asset to our patients over the years because of its many applications. Lasers offer unique and amazing advantages over more traditional approaches to treatment. Here are some of the benefits of laser dentistry:

  • Less pain
  • Faster procedures and faster healing time
  • Limited or no bleeding
  • Anesthesia or injections may not be necessary in many procedures
  • Laser use creates a sterile environment therefore less chance for infections
  • Lasers are extremely precise, so less healthy tissue is removed
  • No need for stitches with laser treatment
  • Lasers can be used for both soft tissues (gum) and hard tissues (teeth)

Intraoral Scanners- Pictures are worth a thousand words. In dentistry, photographs are a very important part of a patient’s dental history and their treatment documentation. At some point in your dental journey, you’ve probably had an impression taken of your teeth by biting into a tray filled with gooey material. The material is usually less than pleasant. An intraoral scanner makes those gag-inducing impressions a thing of the past. This device is used to scan the patient’s mouth and teeth creating a digital image and impression. It is quick and painless. The digital information is then forwarded, via computer software and internet to a dental laboratory where models are printed physically. The lab then constructs the dental appliance or prosthesis in record time. This new dental technology is fast becoming the gold standard leading to improved patient experiences and improved results.

Digital X-Rays– I often say to my patients, “You cannot treat what you cannot see.” Good quality x-rays make a world of difference in the diagnosis and management of diseases. Digital x-rays are now the gold standard in dentistry. When compared to the older traditional x-rays, digital dental x-rays expose patients to less radiation and the images go directly to a computer where they are viewed instantly. Also, digital x-rays can be emailed, enlarged and archived- all important features to our patient’s benefit.

CBCT Scan- The Cone Beam 3D CT Scan has been another “game changer” in dentistry. It is a series of computer-generated images that gives 3 dimensional views of a specific area or the entire mouth. This technology has changed dental radiographic imaging, allowing dentists to treat their patients more effectively. The Cone Beam digital x-ray permits dentists to move from pure diagnosis to treatment planning which allows the patient to see a rendition of the final result.

We have discussed dental lasers, intraoral scanners, digital x-rays and the cone beam 3D     x-ray machine. These technological innovations have become necessary staples in the delivery of high-quality dental services. We are fortunate in The Bahamas to be able to provide the “best in class” technology and expert services to Bahamians and visitors alike.
